This sterling silver two-handled loving cup is engraved on the front, "The Golf Club of Montclair, Presidents Challenge For Men, Presented by F. Meriam Wheeler, July 4, 1896." The back and part of the sides bear the names of the winners beginning with those in 1896. The 1 1/2 pint cup itself measures 4 1/4" tall and 3 3/4" wide, not including the handles. It weighs 10.8 Troy ounces. The elegant Trophy is a early piece of American golf. A quick google of F. Meriam Wheeler reveals that he was a prominent mechanical engineer of his day.  Various articles written by him and references to him can be found online.
