Made in 1914, this is a genuine White Flyer rubber core ball. "White Flyer" is marked on one pole and "Regd No 603842" on the other.
The auctioneer has not seen another White Flyer with red and blue paint as is found on this ball. There is no question that the ball is genuine, however, as the composite white gutta percha cover is visible under the cracks and chips in the paint. Plus, the cover shows evidence of use and significant age. The blue and red paint was likely added to this ball shortly after it was originally sold, as there is no paint down in the cracks. Either way, if the paint is original to the ball or was added, it’s okay because the ball is genuine, the paint is old, and the pattern is one of the most collectible patterns produced. This is a very rare ball in very good condition and still displays exceedingly well!
Note that there is a spot on the ball where there is a tiny chip in the cover. Using a magnifying glass, the transluscence of the white gutta percha is clearly visible. Also clearly visible under a magnifying glass is the white paint under the red and blue paint, which has been neatly and beautifully installed back in the day. Crazing is throughout all the paint, white, red, and blue. This is a very special ball.
