"Bernard Darwin, grandson of the famous naturalist, is celebrated as the greatest golf writer of the twentieth century, and justifiably so. Schooled at Cambridge University in law, Darwin grew dissatisfied the legal profession and turned his attention to his passion in life, golf. It has been said that his writing established the standards for golf reporting against which all others are measured. In "The Golf Courses of the British Isles" (1910), with its marvelous illustrations by Harry Rountree, Darwin recreated the genre of golf travel writing, taking his readers on a tour of the courses he considered the finest in the country."
