Offered here is a copper set of forged irons that Spalding custom made for TP Mills. This set consists of a 3-9, PW & SW and comes from the estate of 2-time PGA Tour winner RH Sikes. A letter written by RH in 2021 provides the history of these irons as provided by David Mills, Truett's son. The letter is dated May 21, 2021, and reads as follows:
"This letter is to explain what David Mills told me about his father's set of Spalding T.P. Mills (personal set) copper iron set 3-9 PW SW. David said that Spalding only made 2 sets of irons for his father. The copper set is the only copper set that Spalding made for T.P. Mills. David said that he thought they were copper (not copper plated) but that he could not be 100% sure."
(signed) R.H. Sikes"
T.P Mills is a legend in the world of 20th century clubmakers. He bagan making putters in the 1950s and eventually designed and personally crafted his putters one at a time. His work gained widespread entry into the highest levels of the game. It was TP who made milling putters into an art form and developed the elegant black finish used by many other handmade putter makers today. And while his custom made putters marked with his name are in collections all over the world, the set of custom forged irons offered here, marked with his name and made for him, is one of only two such sets. This is a sweet set of blades if ever there was. 39" 3-iron. Spalding cord grips.
Note: the actual letter from R.H. Sikes is not included with this set.
