Located in Prestwick, John Gray was one of the first blacksmiths to mark his name on iron clubheads. Once he began making golf clubs, Gray quickly became regarded as a cleekmaker of the highest caliber, and remains so today.
The head on this circa 1875 John Gray cleek is entirely hand-forged, and still has its original patina. The "J. Gray” stamp on the back of the blade is bold and clear, looking as strong today as it did the day it was struck in place by Gray, himself.
The 38 1/2” hickory shaft is original. The hosel measures 4 1/4” .
The leather/sheepskin wrap grip is original. It has been coated with varnish or given some other treatment, which is sometimes found on older grips, to make it more weather resistant.
