Old Tom Morris Signed Postcard

   The terms rare, unique, and one-of-a-kind get thrown around quite often in the collecting community; oftentimes referring to items that aren't all that special to begin with.  Presented here is an item that truly lives up to its billing.  This is unquestionably the Holy Grail of golf autographs. Bobby Jones may be the father of golf in the United States, but when it comes to all-time historical golf figures, Old Tom Morris is the grandfather.  Old Tom Morris held his post as greenskeeper at St. Andrews until 1904.  In the later part of his life, after already becoming a celebrity of sorts in golfing communities, Old Tom Morris was known to sign autographs for visitors to his St. Andrews shop, located just to the right of the 18th green of the Old Course.  Old Tom would famously sign postcards for anyone whom purchased one in his shop.  For this reason, the majority of known Old Tom Morris signatures are on postcards bearing his likeness.  This is an exquisite postcard dating from the later part of the 19th Century.  The signature is clear and crisp and it's unlikely a better one could be found.  There are some pieces of golf memorabilia that are simply collectibles; others are a piece of history.  The winner of this auction will undoubtedly own a piece of golf history, and the man who started it all, Old Tom Morris.
