1949 Masters Tournament Runner-Up Silver Medal

The Green Jacket. The Clubhouse Trophy. The Champion’s Medal. The Crystal. Simply put, the most famous prizes in all of golf come from one tournament – The Masters. Each spring, patrons attending the Masters Tournament marvel at these awards, which are on display for the week in Augusta National’s Trophy Room. For most, this represents the one and only time they will see such great pieces of Masters history. But for the winning bidder, one Masters medal will find a new home.

Presented here is the actual Silver Medal that was presented to Lloyd Mangrum for his second place finish behind Sam Snead at the 1949 Masters Tournament. The 1949 Masters is famous not only for Sam Snead’s first Masters win, but also the first time a Green Jacket was ever awarded to a Masters Champion. While Snead took home the Green Jacket and accolades that come with winning the Masters, Lloyd Mangrum “settled” for this very medal.

Only a handful of Masters Tournament prizes have changed hands in recent years: Doug Ford’s Green Jacket (see Lot 2 in this auction!), and the 1963 Day’s Low Round and 1982 Eagle Crystal come to mind (see our archived auctions – April 2007 and April 2010. respectively). Recently, the Mangrum family parted with Lloyd Mangrum’s golf possessions, thereby bringing his medals to the golf memorabilia market for the first time. To our knowledge, only Roberto DiVicenzio’s second place Masters medal currently resides in a private collection, and that medal has never been offered for sale publicly. It’s impossible to know when the next Masters Medal will be offered for sale; it could be years, or even decades.

This original Silver 1949 Masters Tournament Runner-Up Medal comes from the Lloyd Mangrum family and comes with a letter of authenticity and grant of title from Lloyd Mangrum’s grandson. The medal also comes with a certificate of authenticity from Green Jacket Auctions.
