The Ryder Cup
Significant Harry Vardon
Letter Explaining the Golf Swing
The history
of golf is filled with great players and champions, but only a handful have ever
reached true legendary status. That list arguably only includes the likes of Old
and Young Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
Harry Vardon was part of the so-called Great Triumvirate, along with James Braid
and J.H. Taylor, that launched golf into its first Golden Age at the turn of the
Century. His many accomplishments include winning the Open Championship 6 times
and winning the 1900 U.S. Open. In addition to his many tournament victories,
Harry Vardon is probably most-known for popularizing what became known as the "Vardon
grip" - the overlapping grip that most golfers use today.
Presented here is unquestionably one of the finest golf autographs that
we have ever offered. This 4-page letter is handwritten by the great Harry
Vardon. Amazingly, Vardon spends the entire contents of the letter describing
the golf swing - the very golf swing that is often regarding as one of the
greatest of all-time. Vardon signs off the letter with a great full signature. Also included in this lot is a scrap book that was meticulously kept by the letter's original owner, Grace Jewett Williams, an accomplished golfer in her own right. She had corresponded with Vardon over the years and her love of the game is evident in this great book she kept with newspaper clippings of the great golfers of the day. The scrap book is date 1916, the same year as she received the letter from Vardon in the previous lot and we assume the same time frame as this letter. She even allowed space in the scrap book to chronicle her own accomplishments in golf with newspaper articles and photographs. A wonderful look into the life of a turn of the century female golfer. Rarely do you see something this personal from early women's golf.
