Old Tom Morris and Tom Stewart
Double-Stamped 1890's Iron
Old Tom Morris may have been the biggest name in clubmaking in 1890, but he
often obtained the iron heads from soon-to-be-famous clubmaker Tom Stewart. Tom
Morris would then shaft the club, apply his mark, and sell the club. Presented
here is a dual-stamped Tom Morris (Tom Morris, St. Andrews) and Tom Stewart
(Pipe stamp) iron. The club is also stamped with the initials W.B.L., which
would have been the owner's initials. Most likely, W.B.L. was an aristocrat
wealthy enough to order custom clubs from Tom Morris.
In addition to the cleak marks, the shaft also contains a nice "T. Morris St.
Andrews" stamp, meaning that this extraordinary club has never been reshafted
and is 100% original.
