Chick Evans' Used Putter and Ball

Presented here is one of the only known used putters World Golf Hall of Famer Chick Evans, as well as his personal golf ball and handwritten letters to a dear family friend. This extraordinary collection was purchased by our consignor in 2005 from the family that is involved in the written correspondence pictured below and included in this auction. The putter and golf ball offered here were given by Chick to the family many years after Chick's playing days were completed.

At first glance, this MacGregor putter almost appears to be a kids' club. Evan's unusual hunched-over style of putting would be completely foreign to today's players. The most spectacular piece of this putter are Evans' hand-carved initial's "C.E." at the end of the shaft. The head of the putter also contains some bold marks by the club's maker, MacGregor.

Also included in this lot is one of Chick Evans personal golf balls. This rare ball is marked "Chas. C. Evans", and is the first such ball that we have ever seen. This is not a mass-produced "signature" ball, but is rather a 1920's era golf ball personally made for Chick Evans.

And lastly, this lot contains two original handwritten letters by Chick Evans addressed to the family who owned the putter and golf ball in this lot.

Unfortunately, the exact details of Chick's use of this club may have been lost over the years. What we do know is that Evans thought so highly of this putter and a single golf ball that he gave them both to his dear friend many years after Chick's playing career had ended, but the exact story of these items has been sadly forgotten. Did Evans use this in any significant tournaments, possibly one of his 22 tournament wins? Was the ball used to sink a historic putt? We simply cannot answer these questions - at least not until someone can photomatch a picture of this great club.

In addition to two letters in Chick Evan's own handwriting, the winning bidder will also be given some 2005 correspondence between our consignor and the prior owner when negotiating the sale of these great items.
