Dwight Eisenhower's Golf Bag and Clubs
What an incredible find! When we first learned of Eisenhower's golf bag and
clubs, they were sitting in the garage of a family in Augusta, Georgia, where
they had resided for years after being passed down in the family for decades.
Unfortunately, we were told, the family wasn't all that keen on selling the
clubs. Fast forward a few months and we finally have Eisenhower's clubs - and we
got them just in time to feature them in our Masters Week auction!
Since there wasn't a full sell of clubs to begin with, we decided to somewhat
break up the Eisenhower find, as you will see in the two separate custom Dwight
Eisenhower headcover lots and the lot for the vintage Augusta National balls
found inside Ike's bag! However, instead of breaking up the bag and selling
individual clubs, each of which has substantial value on their own, we've
decided to keep the bag and clubs together as a set and let them go to the
winner of this lot.
Presented in this lot is President Dwight Eisenhower's person golf bag -
complete with his full script name and 5 stars denoting his rank as a 5-star
general. Interestingly, only one other similar Eisenhower golf bag is known, and
it resides at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. Understand that we have made no
efforts to clean up this golf bag or to restore it to top form. The winning
bidder is obviously encouraged to do so, as this bag will certainly display
handsomely.
Also included in this lot are 5 of President Eisenhower's golf clubs. Spalding
Bobby Jones golf clubs, to be exact - as if he'd play anything else!
There are a handful of Eisenhower golf clubs in museums and private collections,
but outside of Augusta National's collection, none can be placed in Eisenhower's
hands at the most famous golf course of them all, Augusta National Golf Club. In
our opinion, that can never be claimed again. While the exact details of
these clubs and bag may have been lost over time, due to their discovery with a
local family in Augusta, the fact that Ike's bag came with a custom Augusta
National headcover and 2 vintage ANGC range balls, it doesn't take much of a
leap of faith to surmise that Ike used this bag and clubs at Augusta National
Golf Club.
The golf clubs and bag are all in good to very good condition. We will be taking
additional photographs as the auction progresses, and as requested.
