Bobby Jones
Masters Tournament-Used Golf Ball
Offered here is what very well may be the only-known golf ball that was used by
Bobby Jones in the Masters Tournament.
This green line Spalding Dot golf ball also once contained an autograph of Bobby
Jones, though the early fountain pen autograph has unfortunately faded over the
years. Accompanying this Bobby Jones golf ball is an impressive amount of
provenance, including from golf historian and collecting pioneer Mark Emerson,
who once owned this ball.
According to the substantial documentation surrounding this ball, it is believed
that this very golf ball was used by Bobby Jones in the Masters Tournament
sometime in the 1940s (Jones played in the Masters in 1941, 1942, 1946, 1947 and
1948). Hardly any remnants of Bobby Jones' original autograph on this ball
remains; otherwise this ball would surely set all records for the highest price
ever paid for a golf ball, possibly even surpassing the $55,865 obtained by
Green Jacket Auctions for a Jones signed ball in April 2011. But even without
Jones' autograph, this is still a very significant Masters Tournament-used ball
by Bobby Jones.
To further bolster the provenance of this golf ball, last year we had our
friends at James Spence Authentication inspect the ball using their Video
Spectral Comparator. Check out the amazing photos below, which show that this
ball indeed once contained an original autograph of Bobby Jones.
This ball comes with numerous letters of provenance from prior owners of this
ball, including from prominent golf historian and collecting pioneer Mark
Emerson.
