1933 Ryder Cup Dinner Menu
Signed by Entire U.S. Team
w/ Hagen, Craig Wood, Horton Smith
On June 14,
1933, the PGA of America hosted a dinner to formally send off the 10 members of
the American Ryder Cup Team as they prepared to travel by ship to the 4th-ever
Ryder Cup - the 1933 Ryder Cup at Southport and Ainsdale in England.
This is an original program from that dinner, which has been signed by the
entire 1933 United States Ryder Cup Team. In addition to the 10 Ryder Cup
participants, a large number of prominent golfers attended this event to send
off their friends in style. In all, at least 46 people have signed this
one-of-a-kind program.
How impressive were the members of the 1933 Ryder Cup Team? 9 of the 10 won
Major Championships (only Ed Dudley did not), and they won a combined 33 Majors!
It should also be noted that other prominent golfers signed this program,
including Jerome Travers and a scarce autograph of 1925 U.S. Open Champion
Willie MacFarlane. Another rare autograph is that of famed sportswriter
Grantland Rice.
The combined individual values of the autographs on this program is
extraordinary. Willie MacFarlane's autograph as a book value of $600, Travers
has a value of $495, and Glenna Collet Vare $300. And that's not to mention the
autograph of the actual Ryder Cup Team members, including the exceedingly rare
autograph of Craig Wood. And what about the program itself? While it certainly
has some condition issues, an unsigned dinner program from 1933 has a
book value of $3,000!
The 10 members of the 1933 Ryder Cup Team that have signed this program are as
follows:
Walter Hagen
Craig Wood (scarce
autograph!)
Horton Smith
Gene Sarazen
Billy Burke
Leo Diegel
Denny Shute
Ed Dudley
Olin Dutra
Paul Runyan
Menu exhibits folds and water stain but is truly a very rare piece. The menu unsigned is listed at $3000
