R&A Secretary Application Letters

Offered here is a piece of history that no one could've expected still existed. In 1899, the great golf course architect H.S. Colt applied for the prominent position of Secretary of the Royal & Ancient. In order to effectively state his case, Colt assembled testimonial letters from fellow members of the golf community. The testimonials include those from Horace Hutchinson, Prime Minister Balfour, J. Ogilvy Fairlie, and many more.

This original collection consists of 13 different testimonials in support of H.S. Colt as he lobbied for the position of Secretary of the R&A in 1899.
