Ben Hogan
Historic 1949 Masters Tournament
"Get Well" Photo to Ben Hogan After
Accident
This was a piece we had to see to believe. Ben Hogan was recovering from his
near-fatal February 2, 1949 car accident when the 1949 Masters Tournament was
underway. At that point, it was unclear as to whether Hogan would ever lift a
golf club again. At the 1949 Masters Tournament, a group photograph was famously
taken depicting the players and some Augusta National members, and sent to Hogan
(along with a silver Humidor) Trophy) as a "Get Well" gift. That original "Get
Well" 1949 Masters photograph currently resides in the Ben Hogan Museum in Dubln,
TX (and the Humidor is in the Ben Hogan Room at the USGA Museum).
Well, apparently more than one of
those 1949 Masters Tournament "Get Well" photographs were produced, as the
offered example was part of the personal collection of Ed Dudley, who was the
head pro at Augusta National in 1949.
This original 1949 Masters field
photograph is matted with a list of all people present for the photo, as well as
the inscription: "The silver humidor which Bowman, Tom and "Leven" have in their
care carries the following inscription: 'To our friend Ben Hogan, in
affectionate appreciation of what you have meant to us and to the Masters
Tournament'"
This is an 8x10 photo that is matted
to 13 1/2" x 13 1/2".
