High Grade Varsity
Gutta Percha Golf Ball
As mentioned by golf ball expert Colin Palmer in his import work on vintage golf balls, The Essential Guide to Collecting Golf Balls, the Varsity ball had a quite unusual pattern, and is rarely seen in fine to unused condition.
Many of the ball makers of the 1890's were inconsistent with the quality of the paint used to cover their golf balls. It appears that the Varsity balls suffered such a fate, as few are seen in fine condition.
This ball is in excellent condition with a full cover of paint, and compares to the example in Palmer’s book where he comments on the importance of the condition.
