Offered here is a circa 1905 Brown’s Patent Water Iron by Winton of Montrose. Another example of this rare club is depicted in Jeff Ellis' "The Clubmakers' Art" (2nd Edition, page 262). According to Ellis, this club is also known as a "Perforated Cleek". Says Ellis: "Initially, they were promoted as reducing 'the wind pressure on the club and adding distance to the stroke." Apparently, the demand for this club was limited, which surely explains why few examples are known to exist.
There are no visible stamping on the back of this club head, though we presume that the club once contained an oval "Browns Patent" mark. Early re-shaft with a period suede grip. Very unusual patent club and seldom seen. Good condition.
