On July 24, 1899, one of the most famous golf matches in history took place. 4 of the most famous golfers in the world competed at Ganton Golf Club (then called Scarborough golf club at Ganton), where Harry Vardon was the head professional. The match pitted England vs Scotland, and featured Harry Vardon and John Ball against Willie Park and F.G. Tait. England would defeat the Scots over 30 holes in front of an estimated 10,000 spectators. It was a match that was not only covered by major newspapers across the globe, it's a match that is still written about today. A rematch was quickly discussed and planned for the following year. Unfortunately, that rematch couldn't happen. The great Freddie Tait died on February 7, 1900 - just after his 30th birthday.
