Offered here is an early Carte de Visite photograph by celebrated St Andrews photographer Thomas Rodger. The photograph purportedly depicts Hugh Lyon Playfair, the Provost of St. Andrews from 1842-1861. The reverse contains the handwritten notation "Hugh Lyon Playfair, Provost." If this is indeed Playfair, it is a fairly young image of him. Though more research is needed to determine more about this image, the vignetting may indicate that Playfair did not sit for Rodger, but that Rodger instead took a photograph of an earlier daguerreotype or even a painting.
