In 1941, an ambitious PGA Tournament was held in Philadelphia. The brainchild of Henry Hurst, the 1st Annual Henry Hurst Invitation Tournament shocked everyone by setting PGA attendance records. One of the primary reasons for those records was that Bobby Jones was back! Despite the fact that we often cite 1930 as the date of Bobby Jones retiring, Jones not only participated in the Masters Tournament each year, but also slowly began a seldom talked about comeback at the age of 39 in 1941. The 1941 Henry Hurst Invitation Tournament was one of Bobby Jones' comeback tournaments. Though rarely mentioned these days, it was front page news in 1941.
When Bobby Jones played a weekday practice round before the tournament, over 2,000 Philadelphians showed up to follow him. This was simply unheard of in 1941 - but that was the draw of Bobby Jones. The tournament itself attracted tens of thousands of spectators.
Offered here is the 14k gold money clip that was presented to Bobby Jones from tournament host Henry Hurst. It is engraved "To Bob, A Wee Token to A Grand Guy, From Henry." Nearly all of Bobby Jones' personal medals and awards are owned by the USGA. It is a truly rare occurrence that one of Bobby Jones' awards becomes available in the collector market.
This 14k gold medal/money clip comes with a letter of provenance from Bobby Jones' granddaughter Adele Jones Westbrook. It was procured from Ms. Adele Jones Westbrook by famed collector Mort Olman. Comes in a 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" wooden and plexiglass display case.
