Jerome "Jerry" Travers was one of the finest golfers to ever live. His accomplishments include 5 Major Championship victories, despite the fact that Travers only entered 16 Majors in his entire life. In fact, after the 4-time US Amateur Champ won the US Open for the first time in 1915, he never entered that tournament again.
The mystery that was Jerry Travers only increased later in life, as he apparently fell upon hard times. In 1940, Travers famously contacted nearly every person he ever knew and asked them to purchase raffle tickets in order for a chance to win his used Mid-Iron golf club. Whether they actually wanted to win a single used club by Travers, or if they were just being polite, lots of people sent Travers money to purchase a raffle ticket!
Offered in this lot is a large cache of documents from that infamous raffle. First, there is an original raffle ticket, which is framed with an actual bank check that is filled out and autographed by Jerry Travers. Also included are numerous pieces of correspondence related to the raffle - some requesting to purchase raffle tickets, others declining, and some inquiring more about the fishy-sounding raffle. There is also a booklet with 3 additional unused raffle tickets.
The framed piece measures 21" x 11".
