What can be said about the 1934 Masters Program that hasn’t already been said? It has solidified its place as the most iconic artifact from the inaugural Masters Tournament, or, quite possibly, any Masters Tournament. If there ever was a golf memorabilia Hall of Fame, this program would be a unanimous first ballot inductee.
It was once widely reported that approximately two dozen programs still exist from the then-called Augusta National Invitation Tournament in 1934. Our experience makes it quite clear that a larger number do exist, likely closer to 3 or 4 dozen. Regardless, the 1934 Masters Tournament program is exceptionally rare, and coveted by almost all collectors.
The offered example is new to the hobby, and is being sold by the family whose grandfather attended the very early Masters Tournaments. Interestingly, inside the program are handwritten notes of golfers' scores from the 1935 Masters Tournament, not 1934. This may confirm the suspicion that leftover 1934 Masters Programs were offered for sale at the 2nd Masters Tournament in 1935. Either that or our consignor's grandfather brought his year-old program to the 1935 event.
The program is in good condition with pencil writing on cover. This handwriting can almost certainly be removed by a specialist, though we have made no attempt to do so. Curiously, the program appears to obtain an autograph of Bobby Jones. If true, this program would be worth tens of thousands of dollars, as no Jones signed 1934 Masters Programs are known to exist. The Bobby Jones signature does not quite check out, however, so we don't know what to make of its existence.
