Robert Forgan is one of the most legendary clubmakers of the 1800s - having learned the trade from Hugh Philp and taking over Philp's business upon Hugh's death on 1856. In 1863, Forgan began to use the Prince of Wales plume or three feather crest on his clubheads, as the result of being appointed "Golf Club Maker to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales." The Clubmaker's Art (2nd Edition) by Jeffery B. Ellis, p. 71.
This Forgan play club likely dates to the 1880s. Many Forgan clubs in the collector market are much more common later examples, but the offered club is quite nice. This dark stain head play club is in Very Good condition and has a very light plume stamp. Its grip is worn but appears original or a period replacement. 44 1/2".
