Offered here is an 1897 Cran Patent (applied for) Brassie Cleek wood face iron by Spalding. The iron clubhead is set with a wooden face secured by two screws. The clubhead, as well as the shaft, are stamped "The Spalding." Very good condition showing minor use with remnants of a leather grip. According to Jeff Ellis, this is one of the few known "Patent Applied For" 1897 models.

This club originates from the famed Jeff Ellis Collection, and this exact club was featured in his books, The Golf Club (p. 72) and The Clubmaker's Art (TCA 1, p. 321; TCA 2, p. 393). This club has not reached the collector market since its sale at the 2007 Sotheby's auction of the Jeff Ellis Collection.
