Offered here is a historically significant sterling silver statue of the great John Ball. This statue is hallmarked London 1895. Not only are sterling silver statues highly unusual, but 1895 puts this piece in the running for the earliest known statue featuring a golfing celebrity - alongside the famous John Laidlay red jacket statue, and the 1890s Horace Hutchinson bronze statue.

John Ball was one of the greatest golfers in history. When this statue was created, Ball had won 4 British Amateurs and 1 Open Championship. Ball would go on to win the Amateur 4 more times - for a record total of 8 British Amateur titles.

Purported to be made by Robert Hutton of London, although we do not see a maker's mark. This statue originates from famed collector and dealer Mort Olman, who sold the statue in the late 1980s where it remained until our consignor purchased it in 2009.

The sterling silver statue itself stands 8 3/4" tall and sits atop a 3 1/2" tall walnut base measuring 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" square. So the overall height is approximately 12". The weight of the sterling silver is 860 grams. Engraved plates on wood base were added by our consignor.
