Offered here is a circa 1920 W.P. Smith patent “evolution" neck joint driver. According to Jeff Ellis, "[a]s he didn't like splice or socket necks, Smith received a 1920 patent to attach shaft and clubhead by pinning the two together with a dowel."
This club originates from the famed Jeff Ellis Collection, and was featured in his book The Clubmaker's Art (TCA 1, p. 144; TCA 2, pp. 167).
