The 1930 Walker Cup is one of the most important tournaments in golf history. Playing Captain Bobby Jones led the American squad to a decisive 10 and 2 victory. It was one of only two times that Jones was Captain. But perhaps more importantly, the 1930 Walker Cup is directly responsible for Bobby Jones winning the Grand Slam and forever cementing his place in golf history. Because Bobby Jones agreed to Captain the 1930 Walker Cup team, this allowed the USGA to pay for the amateur Jones' travel to the UK. It was not a coincidence that just two weeks later the 1930 British Amateur would be held at St Andrews, and the British Open at Hoylake two weeks after that. Bobby Jones' quest for the impregnable quadrilateral was alive and well - and funded by the USGA.
