This putter was originally made without a neck. The shaft remains visible down the entire heel end of the head from the point where it enters the head to the point where it comes out of the sole.
Marked "The Evolution, Reg'd" on the crown and Pat No 161423 \ London" on the shaft, this putter was covered under a 1920 patent issued to W.P. Smith. It is the very putter shown in The Clubmakers Art Second Edition, Vol 2, page 167, and was original sold as part of lot 447 in the 2007 Sotheby's auction of the Jeffery B. Ellis Antique Club Collection.
The head shape is also unique in that it is somewhat triangular. The original 35"shaft still has its original grip.
