Offered here is a Scotty Cameron Fry's "Pity Putter." Numbered 225 of 700 made.
Vog says: This is something even rarer and more unique than you'd think at first glance. I LOVE the Pity Putter. First of all, it's how Scotty refers to it; an order placed by the owner of Fry's Sporting Goods in 1991 with a struggling young putter maker. Secondly, it's Scotty's first production putter and it's harder to find than the 700 number would suggest, as a lot of these wound up in Japan as that market were early fans of Scotty-they were at least 5 years ahead of the U.S. I believe the early demand in Japan had tourists visiting California gobble up much of these in the Fry stores and bring them back to Japan for resale. Now, for THIS particular putter. It has the coveted Cameron certificate of authenticity. It was refinished by the Cameron studio, but some of the original engraving was hand stamped-the "BY" (likely by Scotty) and a Cameron "SCM Crown" was stamped on the back. I have seen perhaps 2 or 3 putters in 20 years where in refinishing at the studio, the engraving was so thin it was lost in the remilling process and was replaced by hand stamping. The fact this was also stamped with an SCM crown tells me Scotty likely did this work himself, as the studio is not in the habit of adding a crown stamp, and I personally believe the stamp is only done on putters worked on by Scotty himself.
