Measuring 45" in length with a nice bit of loft, this circa 1840 long spoon was made by the master craftsman Hugh Philp.  The shaft appears original as does the built-up grip. The head measures 5 5/8" in length, 2" in width, and 1" in face depth.

The face has suffered damage that required a repair—a wood block now fills the center upper-half of the face.  This repair appears made back in the day. As it is presented on the face, the natural color of the wood block is the same as the rest of the face, and on the crown it is colored to match the rest of the head.  The block is keyed into place, wider at the back than at the front. This is a beautiful repair and a step above a leather insert. It is not unreasonable to credit Philp himself with this work given how well it fits and blends into the rest of the head.

This clubhead has great lines and an elegant shape. The Philp stamp is strong, and it's far better to make a face repair as was done on this club than to file out all the bad wood and reshape the face.  Do that and much of Philp's work would be lost.

This is not a "perfect" Philp (are there any?) but there is much to like about this elegant and meticulously repaired club.
