Offered here is a rare, 1887 1st edition of Reminiscences of Golf on St. Andrews Links by James Balfour. Early recording of golf and golf play at St Andrews. The Balfours were a well-known golfing family, the most skillful of whom was James' son, Leslie Balfour-Melville, who won the British Amateur in 1895. The book relates tales of the Old Course during a time when there were relatively few golfers and is of great interest because it gives one of the few first-hand accounts of how the course was played in those early days. "One of the rarest of all golf items”. Very few copies in their original state are known to exist, possibly only 20 to 30 TOTAL! Cornerstone title. First Edition 1887, 68 pages.
Ex-Libre copy from Schulenberg Golf Library in South Africa. Book is renowned for its fragile construction, this copy having light running to the spine. Two pieces of clear tape on either end help to strengthen the interior. Small cover crease on front bottom right corner as shown in photos. Overall a good original copy.
