An incredible find in the World Golf Hall of Fame's collection. This is a large 1800s mezzotint of the legendary painting, The Blackheath Golfer. Hand-tinted mezzotint of William Innes and caddy, engraved by Valentine Green, from the painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott.
Though more modern prints abound, offered here is a true circa 1800s mezzotint of one of the most famous golf paintings in the world. This is not the 1893 platinotype version, or the circa 1910 William Henderson version, but is a large mezzotint that predates those later variations.
The only other example of this vintage print that we can find was offered by PBA Galleries at auction in 2011, and they listed the date as "Mid-1800s".
You can still see and feel the deep lines from the metal (likely copper) printing plate used to create this piece well over a century ago. This piece remains in very good condition with expected aging and discoloration, and minor cracks and foxing. 27 1/2" x 19 1/2".
This circa 1800s mezzotint of The Blackheath Golfer has been part of the World Golf Hall of Fame's impressive collection for many years. It is being consigned today directly by the World Golf Hall of Fame.
