This circa 1880 Alex Patrick play club has a leather face repair on the toe of the face, and vertical scoring added to the face. The 44" shaft is original, and the grip is a replacement sueded leather installed by Laurie Auchterlonie.
The leather face repair was standard practice for its day, used to repair face damage. The club exhibits the craftsmanship of an artisan in both its creation and its repair. It is fascinating to recognize the willingness of golfers to remake a club to keep it in the game.
Alex Patrick grew up in Leven, Scotland where he was not only a talented amateur golfer, but also an apprentice in his family's clubmaking business. Upon his father's death in 1866, Alex took over the business and built a reputation as a fine club and ballmaker. He continued to grow his business into the 20th century.
The head on this club measures 5 3/4" in length, 2' width, 1 3/16" in face depth. Great original finish and stamp on this clubhead.
