Archie Simpson (1866-1955 ) was the youngest of the Simpson brothers and possibly the best golfer. He had the most success as a golfer while his eldest brother Robert was the businessman. Archie was runner up in the Open championship in 1885 and 1890. He learned to make clubs working with his brother Robert in his Carnoustie clubmaking shop between 1884 and 1891. He then struck out on his own and that's when he made this early 1890s play club. A 1903 newspaper puts him in Aberdeen where he was professional at Royal Aberdeen, Balgownie between 1894 and 1911.
While Archie Simpson clubs are out there, long nose clubs made by him hardly ever turn up, and that is because so few were made in the early 1890s. This one is in excellent condition and includes a cork fishing rod grip!
The head measures 5 1/2" long, 1 7/8" wide, 1 3/8" in face depth. The 43 inch greenheart shaft is original, as is the cork fishing rod grip, which is a wonderful feature seldom seen. There is a little bit of cork missing in three places on the grip, but overall the grip looks great!
