David Mitchell was a talented, though obscure, clubmaker. He was making clubs in St. Andrews no later than 1871, when he finished second in a clubmakers golf competition held on the old course at St. Andrews. He was appointed as the clubmaker and greenskeeper at Carnoustie in 1876, and he retired from clubmaking in 1881 due to ill health. He died in 1883.
The Mitchell play club offered here has its original 43 1/2" shaft and coated leather grip. There is significant damage across the top line towards the toe. Head measures 5 3/4" long, 1 1/8" in face depth, 1 15/16" width. Nice long head with original finish. Club does show damage to the topline, but there is a lot that is good about this club as well. Another old warrior that served its owner well. It remained in the fray long after most clubs would have gone in for a leather insert replacement. Such a dedicated soldier!
