May 15, 1876 Handwritten invitation, decorated with a silk ribbon, from Mr. and Mrs. James Hunter (Lizzie Morris) to attend to the funeral services of "their infant son, Tommie". Tommie was Old Tom Morris' 1st grandson, and named by Lizzie Morris after her brother Young Tom Morris who had died just months prior on Christmas Day 1875. This must have been an extremely sad day for the Morris Family - less than 5 months after Young Tom's death.
This letter/invitation is included in the biography of Old Tom Morris (Tom Morris: The Colossus of Golf) by Peter Crabtree, and Crabtree describes it as "This unique manuscript invitation must be considered one of the key items in the history of the game of golf and the Tom Morris story." Lizzie Morris would return to St. Andrews after this tragic death.
This historic item was previously owned by Tom Morris biographer Peter Crabtree, and was part of his legendary collection.
