This is it - the ultimate classic putter, and for good reason: Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus used the George Low Sportsman Wizard 600 to win 15 of his 18 major championships and 78 of his 100 individual victories between 1962 and 1993. His iconic putter is now on display at the Jack Nicklaus Museum in Columbus, Ohio, with a display card listing all 78 victories. And let’s not forget, in 1999 Jack was named Sports Illustrated’s Individual Male Athlete of the Century - his career achievements are unparalleled.
The Wizard 600 was produced in very limited quantities. It was marketed under both the Sportsman Golf Company and Bristol Pro-Golf brands, with Sportsman having acquired the Bristol name in the early 1950s. Fewer Sportsman putters were made than Bristol models, as the Wizard 600 struggled to gain popularity upon its introduction, despite being crafted to an exceptionally high standard. As a result, both versions are rare and highly sought after today. Jack’s use of the Sportsman version, however, makes it the most collectible putter in the classic putter world, with the Bristol version trailing closely behind.
Unfortunately, there are many fakes and reproductions of this putter in circulation. Rest assured, this is not one of them. Everything about this putter is authentic. Even better, it shows minimal use. There are just a few tiny areas where the chrome has a tiny nick (such as on the point of the toe, face side). These tiny flea bites serve in part to authenticate the club as the plating applied to the genuine putters is slightly different from that of the fakes and reproductions. So, too, does the satin finish and the faint grinding lines on the face. (According to Gary Hansberger whose family owned the company when these putters were produced, these almost imperceptible lines were caused by grinding the faces on a rotary sanding disk to ensure flatness.) Today, these lines also help authenticate genuine examples. The 35" pro-fluted shaft is original with most of the shaft band remaining. The original leather grip still has the Geo Low name in script.
This putter comes with a letter of authenticity from RH Sikes, a former PGA Tour pro with two Tour victories to his name. After his time on Tour, Sikes became deeply involved in the collectible golf club market, handling only the finest pieces for his clients, both in the U.S. and abroad.
In his letter of authenticity, dated May 22, 2021 and notarized, Sikes confirms that he had this club in his collection for over 35 years - a clear testament to its quality and significance. He kept only the best of the best, and this club was no exception. His decision to sell it in 2021, shortly before his passing in 2022, was likely due to health reasons. If he had come across a better Sportsman Wizard 600, he would have kept it.
For collectors who desire the best in historically important and exceedingly rare putters, this one ranks among the top. Jack Nicklaus and the George Low Wizard 600 putter will forever be linked together. 35"
