Offered here is an incredibly rare Wood Brothers Dave Wood Augustan driver made for the Augusta National Golf Club.
We turned to Bill Vogeney, who otherwise is our Scotty Cameron putter expert for more information on this, as he's a well-known Wood Brothers aficionado as well. "This is one of 24 persimmon drivers Dave Wood personally made by hand for Augusta National-not the for The Masters tournament, which is a huge difference. I think Dave told me he made 12 in 1993 and 12 in 1994. At the 1993 Masters, Bernhard Langer became the last player to win a men's major championship with a persimmon driver - which just happened to be a Wood Brothers custom made for him. Langer still has that club! I believe this limited run of clubs was inspired by Langer's win. Each one of the 24 were different-different finishes, inserts, shafts, etc. I personally own 2 of the 24, and previously owned 2 others. Dave Wood, along with his two brothers Don and Charlie, started refinishing and repairing clubs in the early 70's in Humble, Texas, and Dave learned from some of the greatest players ever - including Jimmy Demaret. Dave launched his line of persimmon woods in the early 1980's and was able to get his driver into the bag of many players including David Love III, Bernhard Langer, Steve Elkington, Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, etc. They are regarded by players and collectors to be the finest persimmon clubs ever made."
