1963 Masters Crystal - Day

1963 Masters Crystal - Day's Low Round

Most golf collectors are aware of the Stubben crystal given to as awards for various achievements at the Masters Tournament.  There are 4 such awards, the most basic being a crystal glass for recording an eagle during the Masters.  The other awards are for Double Eagle, Hole-In-One and for shooting the Low Round of each day of the tournament.  What most collectors did not realize until this crystal surfaced was that the winner's name and the date of the achievement are etched onto the award.  The awards on display during the Masters Tournament and pictured in the Masters program simply contain an etching of the Masters logo and the name of the award.

This amazing Stubben Crystal is from the 1963 Masters Tournament.  The 1963 Masters remains one of the most important Masters Tournaments of all time.  Jack Nicklaus won his first Masters that year, and won one of these Days Low Round crystal vases in the process.  But Jack Nicklaus did not have the lowest score on every tournament day; April 4, 1963 belonged to Bo Wininger.  Wininger sprinted out of the starting gates with an opening round of 69 to put him in first place and win him this very trophy.  That impressive first round put him in first place, with both Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer 5 strokes behind.  Not to be defeated, Jack came roaring back with a second round 66 and the rest is history.

To call this 1963 Masters Crystal rare would truly be an understatement.  As far as we are aware, this is the first Masters Crystal that has been available at public auction.  And the fact that it comes from one of the most important Masters Tournaments of all time makes its sale even more incredible.  This large vase is in perfect condition and comes with its original gray Stubben felt bag.

Added to Description on March 25: This crystal also comes with a letter from Bo Wininger's daughter.
