2002 U.S. Open Driving
Range Ball of Tiger Woods
If you ever
assumed that the professionals use community driving range balls like the rest
of us do, you’d be wrong. Ever see those pyramids of balls awaiting the pros as
they stroll onto the driving range before a tournament? Those balls have already
been selected for that particular professional. Someone who plays a Titleist
ProV1 isn’t going to improve their game by hitting MaxFlis or Callaways on the
driving range. The driving range employees are instructed as to which player
uses which balls.
Tiger – being Tiger – uses balls specifically reserved for Tiger. Presented here
is one of those balls. These balls are not sold in stores. Nor are they made for
other PGA Tour players. These balls are made for Tiger’s use on the practice
range, and that’s the only place you’ll ever find them. This particular ball was
obtained from a driving range employee at the 2002 U.S. Open, held at Bethpage
Black. The ball comes with the 2002 U.S. Open driving range employee
attesting to its provenance.
