The Ryder Cup
Original 1930 U.S. Open Player's Scorecard
(Bobby Jones Grand Slam)
The presented
scorecard is a newly-discovered piece of Bobby Jones Grand Slam memorabilia. By
way of background, A couple decades ago our consignor, a retired golf pro,
received several pieces of rare golf memorabilia from the York family, who were
longtime Augusta, GA residents and friends of Bobby Jones. It has always been
known that the York family collection contained one of the few known copies of
the 1930 U.S. Open Program from Bobby Jones' Grand Slam (still in a private
collection, but another example is offered in this auction!).
But just last week we received a phone call that truly shocked us. Unbeknownst
to everyone, tucked inside the pages of that rare program was an original
player's scorecard from the 1930 U.S. Open. Judging by the truly mint condition
of this unused and unfolded scorecard, it has likely been hidden inside that
program for the past 82 years! It should be noted that the Yorks were not golf
collectors; they were simply friends with the great Bobby Jones. How exactly
Bobby's good friends obtained an actual player's scorecard from that historic
tournament has no doubt been lost over the years, but even the possible
connection between Jones and this scorecard cannot be ignored. Regardless, this
is one of the only known surviving player's scorecards from one of Bobby Jones'
Grand Slam tournaments, and is without question the finest example in existence.
