Signed Vintage Photograph
HOWARD SCHICKLER COLLECTION OF VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS
Signed large-scale vintage photograph of American golf champion Miriam Burns
Horn by photographer Strauss-Peyton. Warm-toned gelatin silver print on
heavyweight fiber-based paper. Inscribed in black ink by Burns Horn on recto
below image, "With sincere appreciation to Kansas City and Strauss Peyton,
Miriam Burns Horn, National Golf Champion -1927-". Signed lower right by the
photographer "Strauss-Peyton, K. C." Total size is 19 1/2 x 15 3/4 inches, with
mage size being 12 3/4 x 9 7/8 inches.
Early large-scale photographs are exceedingly rare, and autographed examples
generally bring prices of up to 10x that of a similar, more-common smaller
photograph. It is our opinion that the offered photograph is among the most
impressive signed photos of a woman golfer ever to be offered for sale.
Miriam Burns Horn was born in Kansas
City in 1904. In 1927, she shocked the golf world by becoming the first divorcee
to win the US Women's Amateur title, defeating Maureen Orcutt by 5 and 4 at the
Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, NY. She also won the Women's Western Golf
Championship in 1924 and 1930, the Missouri State Championship in 1922 and 1923,
and the Women's Trans-Mississippi Championship in 1927. Burns Horns was known
for her unorthodox golf swing, her driving accuracy and excellent putting
skills, which she learned from Walter Hagen. In 1927, she shot a 74, four
strokes under par, at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club near Pebble Beach, CA
in the qualifying round of the annual Pebble Beach Women's Championship.
Considered a darling of the golf world in the 1920s, Burns Horn attracted a
large gallery and was feted by Hollywood stars.
The offered photograph is being
