        This is one of golf collecting's great treasures - an authentic signed golf ball of the great Walter Hagen.

        As any advanced autograph collector will tell you, there is a massive void in the autograph market when it comes to vintage signed golf balls. There are a couple primary reasons for this. For one, before the invention of the Sharpie and similar pens, signing an attractive autograph on a golf ball was exceedingly difficult. And no doubt because of this, getting golf balls autographed was simply not popular. Secondly, of the balls that were autographed by the likes of Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen and other early stars, the majority of those signatures have completely faded over the years. Again, the surface of an early golf ball combined with the writing implements of the day were not an ideal pairing.

        It is because of these issues that make the offered example so special. Conservatively, Hagen's signature grades a 4 of 10, though it is easily readable. It should also be noted that the camera tends to highlight every flaw in autographs like this; in our opinion, this ball looks even better in person.

        Quite amazingly, Hagen's autograph appears on one of Hagen's personal golf balls - a Hagen #3 ball with a "Sir Walter" notation. Since this is one of Hagen's personal golf balls, and the ball exhibits sure signs of game use, we can presume (but could never confirm) that this ball was also used by Walter Hagen.

Walter Hagen's autograph has already been authenticated by PSA/DNA, and it comes with a full PSA letter of authenticity from 2005.
