Arnold Palmer Course-Used Hickory Irons
for 1964 Magazine Article
In
1964, Popular Mechanics magazine approached Arnold Palmer for an experiment;
they wanted Arnold Palmer to play a round of golf with modern steel shafted
clubs and a round of golf with hickory shafted clubs so that they could test the
results. Offered in this lot are five of those hickory shafted clubs that were
used by Arnold Palmer to play a round of golf for this Popular Mechanics
experiment and resulting article. Photographed below (though we don't own it, so
cannot include it with this lot) is a photograph of that July 1964 Popular
Mechanics magazine article.
All of these five clubs are authentic vintage hickory era
golf clubs that were then custom fitted with newer wood shafts and leather wrap
grips. The driver is a Howard R. Davis Special and the irons are a mix of a
Spalding Model M-6 Niblick, Wilson Mashie, Tom Stewart Spade Mashie & OVB Mid
Iron. The shafts are stamped: "Arnold Palmer, Popular Mechanics, by Bert Dargie
1964."
