Copes Cigarette Card
Original Artwork for “Fiery”

“Without question, the rarest and most difficult of all tobacco golf card sets is the 1900 Copes Golfers.” Swinging into the Past: A look at Pre-War Golf Cards by Dave Johnson. Johnson goes on to state that “[t]his set is truly the Mecca of all golf card sets.” “It is a set of 50 cards that feature artist renditions of some of the major names in the history of golf.”

Well, offered here is the original artwork for card #14 – “Fiery of Musselburgh”. Fiery was the well-known caddie to Willie Park, Jr.

The fact that this original artwork still exists is extraordinary. It has been framed with a rare 1900 Copes card of Fiery that put this piece of artwork into use. The entire framed piece measures 8 3/4" x 7 1/4", and the artwork itself measures approximately 4 1/2" x 3".
