"Bobby" Jones Twice-Signed
1918 Exhibition Golf Match Scorecard
Before Bobby Jones etched his name into golf history, he was simply a golf prodigy out of East Lake in Atlanta. In fact, he wasn't even the best young golfer at East Lake, as that honors would belong to Perry Adair, who was two years Jones' senior. When World War I cackled sporting events throughout the country, a new interest in golf exhibitions to support the war effort was born. Because of what the future would hold, the most interesting of these exhibitions to us today are unquestionably those involving a teenage Bobby Jones.
In truth, Bobby Jones was certainly a promising golf talent at the tender age of 16 in 1918. But his presence at exhibition golf tournaments had more to do with the instant fame his young East Lake cronies were receiving after being dubbed "The Dixie Whiz Kids".
Offered here is not only the earliest known Bobby Jones golf scorecard, it is what James Spence Authentication (JSA) has confirmed is the earliest known autograph of Bobby Jones that they have ever seen.
Actually, make that autographs, as this scorecard was signed twice by a sixteen year old Bobby Jones. Once signed in pen with a full "Robt. T. Jones, Jr." signature, and again by signing "Bobby" Jones - one of the few times Jones has ever been known to signed his name "Bobby".
This original 1918 scorecard is being consigned today by the son of the woman who attended this very exhibition 97 years ago and personally obtained Bobby Jones' autographs. This scorecard was then stored in a scrapbook for decades and has never been seen publicly until now.
When unfolded, the scorecard measures 9" x 6", and 4.5" x 6 when closed. A 16 year old Bobby Jones has autographed the scorecard twice. It is also signed by "Chick" Evans, Perry Adair, and Warren Wood.
Letter of Authenticity from James Spence Authentication (JSA).
