1934 Gene Sarazen vs. Joe Kirkwood
Exhibition Match Badge
It seems like there have been a fair amount of Australian golfers in the news recently. Well, long before Jason Day or Adam Scott or even Greg Norman, there was the formidable Joe Kirkwood, whom many acknowledge for putting Australian golf on the map! In 1923, Kirkwood was the first Australian to win on what would become the PGA Tour, and in 1924 he went on to tally three consecutive and five total tour wins. Kirkwood reached such a level of popularity that he began to play in popular exhibitions of the day.
Here we have an original Badge from July 1934, when Kirkwood contested Gene Sarazen at Cardiff Golf Club. The bold yellow cardboard Badge measures 2 1/8" diameter, with a pin back.
