Until 2016, Golf had not been part of the Olympic Games since 1904. The Gold Medal in the team competition that year was the Western Golf Association. Since the Olympic Committee decided not to include golf in future Olympics after 1904, the WGA decided that it would be a good idea to perpetuate the Olympic competition on an annual basis. They did this starting in 1905 in conjunction with the US Amateur which was held at Chicago Golf Club that year. Twelve four man teams from various regional golf organizations around the United States participated, and the Western Pennsylvania contingent captained by W.C Fownes, founder of Oakmont, won by five strokes with four out of the eight scores under eighty.

The WGA donated a handsome silver trophy, and these "Olympics" were played for in conjunction with the US Amateur Championship until 1919. At that time, play was shifted to the Western Amateur and the two qualifying scores of each team player were used to make up each team’s score. This continued until 1924 when the last event was played at Hinsdale Golf Club. The beautiful  trophy was lost in a clubhouse fire while on display at the Roebuck Club in 1925 and the WGA terminated the competition.

Offered here is an original gold medal from that final "1924 Olympics." This medal is engraved with the names of the Southern Team, which we believe played out of Memphis Country Club.
