Offered here is the impossibly rare original 1st generation Macgregor Response M615 "D.C. Long" putter. This putter, of course, was made famous when Jack Nicklaus used it to win the Masters Tournament. Though approximately 500,000 Response putters were eventually made, this is one of the initial batch of only 200 M615 "D.C. Long" putters that Jack actually used to win the Masters Tournament. Jack Nicklaus requested that his be painted black, which was done to 3 or 4 of these exact putters. This is one of the remaining 196 or 197 from that first batch, which were all a rough gray except for the few painted for Mr. Nicklaus.

The script "D.C. Long" on the sole is the signature of the club's designer, Macgregor R&D head Clay Long. According to an interview Mr. Long did with Puttertalk.com in 2011, 800 total Response putters bear the correct "D.C. Long" script that Nicklaus used, but only 200 of them are the same M615 model that Jack used. And Jack's were taken from that initial batch of 200 - of which the offered putter is one of the surviving examples. Clay Long also speculated in 2011 that very few of the original 200 putters are likely to still exists, as the neck was brittle and they frequently broke.

That would explain why very few of the M615 "D.C. Long" Response putters have surfaced in recent years, despite the fact that it is one of the most famous putters ever produced.

Side Note: Jack Nicklaus' actual putter used to win the 1986 Masters Tournament is currently missing. If you have a black Response putter at home, please check the sole for the "D.C. Long" and give us a call. Mr. Nicklaus would like that one back!
