John McDermott has an almost cult-like following among collectors. He was the first U.S. born golfer to win the US Open, and he did it in back to back years in 1911 and 1912. History has been more kind the 1913 US Open Champion Francis Ouimet, as McDermott collapsed in the Atlantic City clubhouse in 1914 and spent the remainder of his life in and out of the mental hospital.
